Apparently, serving on the city council is considered a hot job in Rosemount.

Eighteen residents have thrown their names in the hat to fill a vacant city council spot — more than city officials had anticipated. The monthlong application process ended Wednesday.

"Hey, everybody wants to be on the team," Mayor Bill Droste said.

The council will appoint a resident to serve the final two years of Kurt Bills' term. Bills, a Rosemount High School economics teacher, was elected Nov. 2 to represent House District 37B.

Meanwhile, the Mendota Heights City Council is expected to approve a process tonight for its vacant seat, according to City Administrator David McKnight.

Droste said the number of applicants in Rosemount means the council most likely will have to add at least one more night of interviews, which begin Jan. 11.

"It's a good problem to have," Droste said. "My personal belief is we owe all of them an interview. Plus, we have openings on commissions that we'll be advertising within a month that some of them may be interested in."

Council members will be paid $6,396 this year.

The list of applicants includes Joe Kurle and Tim Judy, both of whom ran unsuccessfully for council in the most recent election. Judy lost to incumbent Mark DeBettignies by 26 votes, a margin that forced a recount.

High interest in being on the Rosemount City Council is not new.

In 2008, 26 candidates appeared on the November ballot for two council

positions. The turnout prompted a new city ordinance that allows for a municipal primary if the candidates outnumber the number of open seats by 2-1.

In Mendota Heights, the appointed resident will serve the remaining two years of Sandra Krebsbach's council term. She was elected mayor Nov. 2.

The city will start accepting applications Wednesday, according to the proposed timeline, with the deadline Jan. 11. The council will interview applicants Jan. 13.

The salary will be $4,200 per year. Interested Mendota Heights residents should call McKnight at 651-255-1153 for an application.

The council last appointed a member in 1998 after a resignation, McKnight said.
