BERKELEY - CalBears.com caught up with junior defender Melissa Sheehan after the California lacrosse team's last road trip. Her Golden Bears have a 3-2 record early this season after they split games at Longwood (an 8-6 loss) and Davidson (a 14-10 win). A product of nearby Pleasanton, Calif., Sheehan emerged as a starter as a freshman in 2009 and was a member of the MPSF All-Academic team in 2010.

CalBears.com: The team bounced back from that Longwood loss to beat Davidson. What was the difference in your last game?

Melissa Sheehan: Our attack just worked a lot better and made more connections this game. It made our defensive job easier. There was just much better execution.

CalBears.com: What was the best part of the trip, off the field?

MS: We played a game called "hot seat" on the bus. We ask a random question, and people have to respond. It's pretty funny. We play it with Dave, our trainer, and our coaches, too. It's a way to get to know your teammates and staff.

CalBears.com: Your next game is on March 11 at second-ranked and 2010 NCAA runner-up Northwestern. Are you going to benefit from having almost two weeks off from competition?

MS: We don't have a game this week, but practice will be pretty tough. We're just getting ready for Northwestern, which should be a pretty challenging game.

CalBears.com: You had a tough loss against Longwood last Friday, though the defense played well. Talk about your effort against the Lancers.

MS: We were trying out one of our new defenses. We started off really well; in the second half we let in too many goals. We didn't come into the game with a mindset to play. We had a slow start and couldn't catch up to the pace. We really didn't show up to play.

CalBears.com: Was it difficult to play the season opener - an eventual 20-6 loss to No. 10 Notre Dame - the same day you learned the program was reinstated?

MS:
It was tough. There was a lot going on in our heads. It definitely played a factor in our heads. We were so happy, people were talking about how that changed their plans and a lot of decisions had to be made.

CalBears.com: Has the defense improved since the Notre Dame game?

MS: I think so. After each game, we look at what our weaknesses were so we can improve for the next game. A lot of it has to do with midfielders and attackers coming back to play defense. The more we play better together, the better that unit starts to work together.

CalBears.com: You're majoring in environmental economics and policy. How did you decide on that?

MS: I really like economics. Berkeley has given me a passion for the environment and green issues. It's a real hot job area lately. I see myself being a green consultant for companies. It's really piqued my interest, and it's a great major. Berkeley does a great job with sustainability. There are lots of easy ways to save energy and really help the environment.

CalBears.com: What do you want to do after you graduate - go to grad school? What career do you want to pursue?

MS: It's still up in the air. I see myself going to grad school. I'm not sure if I'm going to do that right away or get some industry experience first. I want to do grad school when I'm ready.

CalBears.com: You're a San Francisco Bay Area native from Pleasanton. What's the best thing about going to college and playing lacrosse here?

MS: The most rewarding thing is I coach with the Bear Lax club for high school and younger girls in the Bay Area. Those girls have fun watching me play, and I enjoy coaching them. It's great to see how much this sport has grown here.

CalBears.com: What do you do in your spare time?

MS: I'm involved in anything outdoors. I love hiking, skiing; any active sports get me excited. I'm down for anything that involves the outdoors.

CalBears.com: What kind of music do you like?

MS: I definitely love old-school rap or hip hop. It brings back the good old days from middle school.

CalBears.com: Has your team thought about making a video similar to what men's soccer did last semester?

MS: That was pretty funny. Props to them, and field hockey made one as well. We have thought about it. I think lacrosse has to make its own video.

CalBears.com: What was the last movie you saw?

MS: We saw "Taken" with Liam Neeson on one of the bus rides on the Virginia trip. It was pretty awesome. An action-packed movie.

CalBears.com: What's your favorite TV show?

MS: "Glee." It's my guilty pleasure. It's very entertaining.

CalBears.com: Do you have any hidden talents?

MS: I love to paint.
