| Perdue, Dems criticize charter school revamp Posted: 03 Mar 2011 11:10 AM PST RALEIGH (AP) — House Democrats and Gov. Beverly Perdue are trying to slow a charter school bill that passed the state Senate last week. Opponents say the bill would damage traditional public schools and provide little accountability for the alternative schools. Perdue told the State Board of Education today she's worried the Republican-backed measure would strip regular public schools of resources and fail to provide adequate oversight for charters. The House Democratic Caucus had harsher words at a news conference later. Rep. Rick Glazier of Cumberland County called it "an assault on public education." Fellow Cumberland County Rep. Marvin Lucas also ripped the bill. The bill's primary component would remove the current 100-school limit on charter schools.
