“What Are The "Hot" Jobs?” |
| Posted: 17 Nov 2010 08:29 PM PST Many people are searching for not only a job, but in many cases... a career. You may be one of them. However, its not always easy to spot these types of opportunities.
They range in pay level and experience required, but they are out there. ABC 36 took a look at a couple of the jobs that are seeing the highest demand right now. "There's so many different positions that you can work in. From an outpatient clinic like this to 'home health', to nursing homes, to schools, to factories," says Stephanie Turner, Physical Therapist at St. Joseph East Hospital. That's why physical therapy is at the top of the "hot jobs" list here in Fayette County. According to the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet, nearly 40 new positions will open over the next 10 years. Turner is seeing a lot more people switch to her field. "In my particular physical therapy class, we had several people in there that it was their second career," Turner says. Nursing is another career in high demand according to the KEWDC. Nearly 400 new nursing jobs will become available over the next decade in Central Kentucky. Right now, KEWDC says, if you become a registered nurse, you're looking at a starting salary of $26 an hour. Experts believe the reason for the uptick in the medical profession is because of the aging society we live in. Many of the "baby boomers" will soon be sliding into "senior citizen" status. But if you are looking to get into one of these positions you'd better do your homework, literally. Dr. Ken Troske, Chair of UK's Economic Department says going back to school is almost a must for many jobs. "People are going back to school to increase their flexibility because chances are, what is a hot job now will be the old, stale declining jobs in a few years and you have to be prepared for that," says Dr. Troske. For instance, if you want to get into physical therapy, you'll need a Bachelor's Degree and then some. But you have to understand going into a "hot" career that while the payoff will be good in the end, there may be some pain in your wallet getting to that point. "The job you're going to get in the next sector is going to pay you less money. Its going to take a while to get back to that you're earning the same amount in the new job as you did in the old job," Dr. Troske adds. While many are going back to school, not every "hot" job will require the extra education. The KEWDC say jobs found in food service, such as cooks and waiters, along with jobs in retail sales and construction are always in high demand. Generally these possible employers won't expect you you head back to school.
