“State website reveals hottest Hoosier jobs” |
| State website reveals hottest Hoosier jobs Posted: 01 Oct 2010 02:25 PM PDT Rich Van Wyk/Eyewitness News Indianapolis - A new list of hot job opportunities is out and it is full of surprises. The hottest of the "Hoosier Hot 50 Jobs" are in hospitals and computers, which is no surprise, but construction jobs, which were decimated by the recession, ranks just as hot. "These are job projections based on 2018 and demand by 2018," said Marc Lotter, Indiana Workforce Development. But why care about jobs that are going to be hot eight years from now? That's about the time high school students will be graduating college, ready to look for work. "I was shocked by some of these numbers," said Decatur Central senior Edwin Ramirez. A group of seniors at Decatur Central looked over the jobs list for their potential careers. Accounting was in the top ten, while plumber ranked at 22. "It's shocking it's that high, but when you think about it, it is a job somebody has to do," said Josh Mannix. "It's still a high-demand job. To me, it's important. It is always going to be there," Amber Derrow said about physical therapy. The state's website also has videos of workers that already have hot jobs and their average salaries. Pharmacist ranks a surprising 46th. "Pharmacy is still a good job to have. It still makes a lot, average salary is $105,000. That's still a pretty good job," said Brandon Ledford. All the jobs require special training or a college degree, all listed on the website. Aja Morrow plans to major in accounting at college. "If we would have had this years ago, I definitely would have been in accounting classes in high school, so I could be up there," Morrow said. The jobs on the hot jobs list, state officials say, pay better than average wages and all require more than a high school diploma. Of the 50 hottest jobs of the future, 16 are considered hot right now.
