“Homeowners Fight Costs, Do Work Themselves” |
| Homeowners Fight Costs, Do Work Themselves Posted: 25 Aug 2010 06:32 PM PDT You may have noticed your neighbors doing more work around their house or yard this summer. From paint jobs to plumbing, homeowners are getting to work."A lot of people are coming in to try and do it themselves," Steve Price of the Redlands Ace Hardware explains. "I don't think people have as much money as they had in the past," Price speculates. That has many families trying to do more work around the house themselves instead of hiring someone else. This summer swamp cooler repair seems to be the hot job."Replacing pads, oil, bearings different things. Pretty much everyone can do that if they can get on their roof," Price explains. You'll probably save money doing the work yourself. But, don't expect to save time."Don't get in a hurry. Take your time and come in and ask questions," Price suggests. Some folks are doing the work to make their home more competitive in the buyers market."We see a lot of people fixing leaks and fixing sprinkler heads and it can increase the value of their home," Price says.Others may not be able to afford a new house, but want to to give their old digs a new look. Those types of projects can range from a fresh coat of paint to a complex kitchen make-over.Taking on your first home improvement project may be intimidating. But, it doesn't have to be. If you have the right tools and information, it could even be kind of fun."Sitting back and seeing what you've done with your hands is a lot of fun," Price says with a smile.Hardware store employees have a wealth of information they' are happy to share with beginners. For example, they say start with the basics."Getting the correct tools will make the job a lot easier and a lot of times they are very inexpensive. So, you continue to save money and have that tool for future projects," Price explains. He emphasizes how important it is to do your homework and take your time. Don't expect to get the work done as quick as the professionals. If you rush the job and make mistakes, you may end up paying a lot more in the long run. Copyright 2010 KJCT. All rights reserved.
