“Indian Land looking for more firefighters” |
| Indian Land looking for more firefighters Posted: 23 Jul 2010 03:53 PM PDT INDIAN LAND, SC (WBTV) Indian Land is one of the fastest growing communities in Lancaster County. Indian Land's fire department, like most of Lancaster County's, is made up of volunteers finding those volunteers is a struggle. Before lunch time the Indian Land volunteer fire department responded to two calls for service. No big deal right? But only four firefighters showed up. "The more calls you run the more volunteers that you need. We're not getting the volunteers but we're running the extra calls," said Joe Pezzuti. Pezzuti moved to Indian Land from New Jersey in January. The first thing he looked for when he settled in was the local Volunteer Fire Department. "It's more than going out and putting out fires it's the camaraderie of getting together with the guys," said Pezzuti. The Indian Land Department only has 12 members. "We need as many as we can get," said Pezzuti. Station 10 covers about 25 square miles in the pan handle of Lancaster County. The department needs about 25 members, one fire fighter per square mile. Pezzuti says the reason the station doesn't have the numbers. "Volunteering takes time and people just don't have the time anymore," said Pezzuti. Joining a department is easy, but to be able to grab a hose and fight a fire you'll need 120 hours of classroom and field training. "It's all nights, weekends it's not during the day so you work your eight or nine hours during the day go home get a bite to eat and now you go training for four hours it a lot to ask from someone," said Pezzuti. Volunteers don't get paid and it's a hot job. Pezzuti has been a volunteer fireman for 18 years and he says he doesn't do it for money. "There's nothing better than putting out a fire or helping someone at a car accident or a first responder call it is rewarding," said Pezzuti. If you would like to join the Indian Land VFD call 803-547-2747 or the department has training Monday nights at 7:00pm. Station 10 is located on Six Mile Creek Road in Indian Land. If you don't live in the Indian Land area and want to join a Volunteer Fire Department contact your county Fire Marshal office. Copyright 2010 WBTV. All rights reserved.
