A Hot Job That Keeps Cool

Corning, N.Y. - When keeping yourself cool in these hot conditions, you're told to dress in lighter fabrics. Fire fighters do not have that option.

Fire fighters have to wear heavy layers, even in the extreme heat. For them, the key is to stay hydrated throughout the day. "It's hot, it's hot once you put the gear on, you're going to start sweating, you'll be loosing water weight that's for sure!" stated Corning firefighter Bryan Nehring.

At the Corning Fire Department, fire fighters need to drink at least two quarts of water a day to stay hydrated. They are covered head to toe in layers of thick protective clothing. Because of this, they can easily loose more than five pounds when responding to a call in this weather. Even in extreme heat, fire fighters have to be set and ready to go in two minutes putting on at least 80 pounds worth of equipment.

Fire Chief John Tighe stated that they do not have many options to stay cool when exposed to humid conditions. They do;however,  have the option of placing cooling vests underneath their jackets. The vest is similar to a giant ice pack that keeps their body temperatures cool when the job gets hot. They also keep the trucks stocked with water and power drinks.

"We keep fluids on the truck, trying to stay as cool as possible when we get out. There are only four of us now, so everyone has to do more of they fair share," said fire fighter Scott Bump.

Fires in this type of weather can spread much faster than normal. The reason for this is that the humidity and dryness keeps fires blazing longer.  "On a day like today, it's especially important to get lots of help and give your crews plenty of breaks in this heat," stated Tighe.
